Slate is a metamorphic rock that is formed when shales and clays are put under great pressure and heated inside the earth for millions of years.
Slate tiles can be used on walls and floors inside and outside the home. Slate comes in three main finishes, Rivened, cleft and honed. Rivened slate has the most textured surface, it is non-slip and ideal for use in kitchens or outside on patios. Cleft slate is slightly less textured. It is also non-slip, but many prefer to use this texture within the home as it is softer to walk on bare foot, but its cleft appearance ensures that you maintain that distinctly slate look. The honed variety has a smooth surface with no lumps and bumps. However, Honed slate still offers you the quality and durability of using slate. All these natural grains distinguish slate from other products and as it comes in a range of colours and grains, it can be used to give a room a look that ranges from extreme modernity with smooth clean lines to a country cottage effect or barn conversions.
